The week of February 26, my blog discussed the new Pinterest Lens feature that Pinterest has rolled out. ((The Pinterest Lens)) The lens is available on mobile only. An experiment today revealed some interesting results. Here are some of the Pinteresting findings.
THE EXPERIMENT
The first item snapped was a picture of the kitchen timer on my desk. A copy of the results on the Pinterest Lens is to the right.. Various key words that popped up such as vintage, timer, and retro were correct. Timer Pinterest LensKey words such as wall clocks and watches were not accurate.
As you can see, Pinterest also showed a few suggested pins. That was on target. The suggested Pinterest pins were spot-on.   
Pinterest-Lens-MicrophoneThe next item tested in the experiment was the Yeti Microphone on my desk. As you can see in the image to the left  the results for this were not so good. (I did love the snoopy blow dryer). 
Cars, scooters and cameras among others were suggested keywords for the Yeti Microphone.  These results were erroneous.
The experiment continued through other parts of the house.Pinterest-lens-flowers The adventures took us into the kitchen. We have a garbage can in the kitchen that my in-laws made for us. It is a craft. Let’s try that. The results are in the image to the right.
Close but no cigar. It is decoupage, but that is about as close as the Pinterest Lens got. Keywords identified with the image – cards, stamps, stampin up – were way off. The keyword flower is applicable because it is a magnolia on the lid.
Next, we wondered into the living room and spotted the antique lamp. This item should be perfect to try. Because we thought zooming in closer would make the results more accurate, we zoomed in on the top part of the lamp. The results were flawed. The keywords - Vases, perfume, bottles - were incorrect.
Let’s try that again and get the whole lamp in the image this time. Zooming in on the entire lamp worked much better.Pinterest-Lens-Lamp The Lens result was lamps. (image to the left)
The lamp image suggested was very similar to our antique lamp. vintage, lamps, antiques, glasses were relevant keywords to use for searching.
We think we are getting the hang of how to use the lens now.
Pinterest-Lens-Antique-plateTo test our new Pinterest Lens skills we decided to try an antique plate. Using what we had learned, we
  • Zoomed in on the plate
  • Included the entire plate
  • Snapped a picture of the plate
The results were awesome. An example of the exact same plate was shown. Dinner plates, antiques, porcelain, vintage, plates were accurate keywords to research. You can see this in the image to the right.
Being the adventurous type, we had to play with the Lens also. Pinterest-Lens-coupleWe took a picture of my husband and me that sits on my desk. Considering the object we photographed, The Lens produced decent results and keywords. Well maybe not baby but we do like the keyword beautiful. (image to the left)
We had to try at least one additional funny example. Some notes for a project were lying on my desk. We decided to see what the Pinterest Lens would produce if we photographed the notes.
The joke was on us. Amazing! The Lens actually found images of writing. Pinterest-Lens-writing For those who may be skeptical, we provided the image to the right. The keyword writing is accurate but others are a little off.
If you click on the keyword, Pinterest shows you more examples of that particular keyword. We clicked on the keyword writing and more examples of writing were shown. (images to the right)
CONCLUSIONS
The Pinterest Lens is a great tool. There are a few glitches that need to be worked out but that is true of all new programs when they are rolled out. The power The Lens could give consumers and businesses astounds me.
For example, the lamp image could lead a pinner to a person who is selling a similar lamp. Someone  may be at a friend’s house and say, “We have always wanted one of those type lamps.” They take out their phone and snap a picture with the Pinterest Lens. The image leads to someone who has one for sale. The pinner clicks on the lamp image and purchases the lamp.
The consumer benefits because they find an item that may be hard to find and they had been wanting for a long time. The seller benefits because the lens led them to their pin and they made a sell. 
WAYS TO USE LENS DEMONSTRATED 
If you look at the bottom of the Lens screen, you will see “More Ways to Lens.” Here Pinterest gives you examples of ways to use it.  Such as:
  • A picture of a scene – reveals travel places
  • A picture of your pet – reveals pins of similar animals
  • A picture of a plant – could help you know what type of plant it is
  • A picture of rocks at a friend’s house – shows you where you can purchase them
The possibilities are endless. The potential is phenomenal.  Another tool Pinterest introduced to increase their value to consumers and business owners.
